How to use it: the four rules, the first week, and how not to brace

How to use it

The four rules, the first week, and how not to brace.

Four things decide whether this works, and none of them is the mat. This page is the whole instruction set. It is also printed on a card in the box.

The protocol

Four things decide whether it works.

  1. Bare skin.
  2. A firm floor.
  3. Shoulders to hips.
  4. Stay past the turn — about five minutes.
Bare skin, same back
Rule 1

Bare skin

A single cotton layer takes most of it away, because the points spread their load across the fabric instead of sitting on you. A shirt is a genuine de-escalation setting, and the right way to start. It is not the way it works.

On the floor
Rule 2

A firm floor

A bed absorbs the mat and you get a fraction of it. Carpet is the middle setting. Bare floorboards or a hard rug is full strength. If you want it gentler, you do not need a different mat. You need a softer surface.

Shoulders to hips
Rule 3

Shoulders to hips

Contact from the top of your shoulder blades to the top of your hips, all at once. If your lower back is off the end of the mat, your lower back is not getting any of this. Sit first, then lower your shoulders, then your hips.

The turn, timed
Rule 4

Stay past the turn

The first few minutes are sharp, hot and busy, like a foot waking up across your whole back. At around five minutes it turns: the sharpness stops being sharp and warmth comes up underneath it. Twenty minutes is the session. Five is the turn.

The instruction nobody teaches

How not to brace.

If your baseline is already guarding, you can lie on this and guard against it too. Three things, and they matter more than anything you could have bought.

01
Breathe out into the points

Not held breath, not bracing against them. Exhale into the contact.

02
Let your weight settle

Most people hold themselves fractionally above it for the first few minutes without noticing. That is the position that hurts. Letting the weight down is the position that does not.

03
Do not hold still against it

Stillness is not the same as stiffness. Your back works this out on its own in about five minutes, and it does not consult you.

This is why it works for people who have failed at every relaxation practice they have tried. It is not asking you to be good at relaxing.

The first two weeks

Change one thing at a time.

Every rough first night in this category starts the same way: the full twenty minutes, on the floor, bare, on night one. Build up instead.

Nights 1 to 3Thin shirt on

Bed or carpet, not the floor. Five to ten minutes.

Nights 4 to 7One step up

Take the shirt off, or move to a firmer surface. One or the other, not both at once.

Week 2 onwardFull strength

Bare skin, firm floor, twenty minutes, shoulders to hips. Nightly.

The intensity dial

Every lever you have.

There is one mat. Intensity is a shirt and a surface, so there is no gentle version to regret buying.

Gentler → More intense
Surface Bed Carpet Hard floor
Barrier Thick shirt Thin shirt Bare skin
Position Sitting or leaning into it Lying flat Weight on one area
Duration Five minutes Fifteen Twenty-plus

Aiming it

A rolled towel under the mat, directly beneath the spot you want, lifts the points into it. Weight on one shoulder at a time concentrates everything into a smaller area. Getting on: sit beside it and move across onto it. Coming off: roll sideways, quickly is easier than slowly.

Two protocols, two different sessions

To settle: lie on it for twenty minutes. Evening, before bed, bare skin, firm surface. This is the main one.
To wake up: stand on it barefoot for five. Morning. It does the opposite, and people are consistently surprised by that.

The first time

Minute by minute.

0:00 – 5:00Sharp, hot, busy

Your instinct is to tense against it. Breathe out into it and let your weight settle.

~5:00The turn

The sharpness stops being sharp. Warmth comes up underneath.

5:00 – 20:00You are not tolerating anything now

Most people go quiet here, and a fair number fall asleep, which is why you set a timer first.

Standing upThe second wave

Blood floods back into the pressed areas. The strongest sensation of the whole thing, after you get off.

The mirrorYour back is red

Not pink. Red, across everywhere the points touched. It fades in twenty to forty minutes. That is the sign you did it right.

If you feel more braced the day after than before, drop a level: softer surface, shirt on, five minutes, or stop. Tell us and we refund you. If you are pregnant, or have a skin, circulation or clotting condition, ask the clinician who manages it before you order.
